Town Reaches Tentative Agreement With Stoughton Media Access Corporation

Key Points

  • Tentative agreement reached between the Town and SMAC
  • Draft agreement pending formal review and votes by both boards
  • SMAC public hearing continued to March 10

The long-standing uncertainty surrounding the relationship between the Town of Stoughton and Stoughton Media Access Corporation (SMAC) moved closer to a resolution Thursday night. During a brief session of the Select Board, officials announced that legal counsel for both the town and the local media access provider have successfully brokered a tentative agreement to resolve pending actions.

Vice Chair Debra Roberts informed the community that a draft agreement is currently being prepared for formal review. That draft agreement will be delivered to the Select Board and members of the SMAC Board for their consideration and approval, Roberts said. She noted that once both boards have taken affirmative votes, the town will schedule a joint meeting with SMAC to read the statements publicly to residents. Roberts also expressed her gratitude to the community, adding, On behalf of the Select Board, I would like to thank residents for your patience in this matter and your understanding of the public process.

While the details of the agreement remain under wraps until the boards formally vote, Chairman Stephen Cavey emphasized that the board is prioritizing a thorough and correct resolution over a fast one. Cavey noted that he has remained in communication with the SMAC board, describing them as great partners in the process. This delay is, I'm sure, frustrating to many. It's not ideal. I think that the frustration is shared by all, but also that in this particular case, everyone is looking to do things correctly rather than quickly, Cavey said. Motion Made by S. Cavey to continue the public hearing until March 10, 2026, at 7:00 PM. Motion Passed 3-0.

The announcement followed a 39-minute executive session where the board, with members Louis Gitto, Debra Roberts, and Stephen Cavey present, met to approve minutes from several previous closed-door meetings dating back to late 2025. Motion Made by D. Roberts to enter executive session. Motion Passed 3-0. Members Scott Carrara and Joseph Mokrisky were absent from the proceedings. The Select Board expects to provide further updates during the continued hearing on March 10, which Chairman Cavey described as a step toward getting back to meaningful work for the town.
