Key Points

  • Select Board delays SMAC public hearing to allow time for paperwork completion
  • Chairman Cavey characterizes SMAC as a good partner in ongoing settlement talks
  • Comcast Channel 9 retired with local programming moving to high-definition channels
  • Scheduled executive session cancelled due to lack of necessity

A brief session of the Stoughton Select Board on Thursday ended with a decision to delay the continuation of a public hearing regarding the Stoughton Media Access Corporation (SMAC). The board, meeting for only four minutes, agreed to reschedule the hearing to a future date to allow both the town and SMAC to finalize necessary paperwork following months of settlement negotiations.

Chairman Stephen Cavey emphasized that the delay was procedural rather than a sign of conflict. SMAC has been doing a really great job recording with us on this. And this is mostly just at this point related more to getting paperwork filed and things filled out correctly, Cavey explained. He added that the media organization has been a good partner throughout the process and asked residents not to read anything into the postponement. Motion Made by D. Roberts to move the public hearing to a future date. Motion Passed 3-0-0 with Member J. Mokrisky providing the second.

The hearing, which originally opened in October 2025, has been a central focus for the board as it seeks to resolve legal and contractual issues with the town’s local access provider. While a specific future date for the hearing was not finalized during the meeting, the board has previously expressed optimism regarding an amicable resolution and the eventual dismissal of ongoing litigation.

In other business, Vice Chair Debra Roberts informed residents of changes to the local cable lineup following the start of the year. Comcast/Xfinity retired Public Access Channel 9 on January 13, 2026. SMAC's public programming will continue to be available in high definition, Roberts stated. She noted that additional details regarding these changes were published in the recent edition of the Suburban Shopper. A scheduled executive session was also cancelled at the start of the meeting after Chairman Cavey determined the session was no longer necessary.
